David Wood discusses "What is SEO" and why you may not need to know!
“If a tree falls in the forest…
If you create a lovely website, or blog, or video and no one sees it… it doesn’t do you or anyone else any good at all.
It’s like the old question, “If a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it… does it make a noise?”
Far and away, the most common way for people to find a web site is to enter a search word or phrase in a search engine and click on one of the choices that show up. (Did you get here by asking Google “What is SEO?”)
More often than not that search engine is Google of course, and more often than not that all important “click” is awarded to a link on the very first page of Google “results.”
So, if you want your page to be seen, to “make a noise” in the forest that is the World Wide Web, you need your site to show up on the first page of Google. That’s the purpose and the value of SEO. That’s why it’s important to ask, “What is SEO?”
What is SEO?
SEO is Search Engine Optimization. SEO is the delicate art and science of constructing your website, blog, FaceBook page or whatever, in just such a way that it gets noticed and it gets recommended by search engines. But wait, it’s not that easy!
“Little Miss Muffet…”
Look, I have no idea what a tuffet is or why she sat on one, and I personally don’t eat curds… but that’s Little Miss’s issue.
Let’s talk about spiders and why you might be frightened away! You might ask “What is SEO?” but maybe you don’t want to know!
In the inter-web world there are a number of things called “web crawlers.” These include such things as web robots, web scutters, ants, worms, and spiders. These things are all really sophisticated software programs known as “automatic indexers.” Somehow, they get the data and text from like 25 gazillion web pages all over the planet, and keep track of what’s on them. Don’t ask me or anyone I know how they manage this. No one I know cares, and I certainly don’t care. Knowing what is SEO is enough for me, thanks anyway.
Here’s the point. Spiders KNOW how to match up a search on Google with millions of pages that relate to the search term entered. And then the Google Logic DECIDES which of all of this millions of pages is the most likely to satisfy your query. How does Google Logic decide what you want? Now we’re getting to why you might be frightened away from SEO!
“Be afraid, be very afraid…”
All of these ants and spiders and various crawly things gather up the information. But the choosing of what’s important or relevant is done by Google’s mysterious logic. The rules of what is relevant are know completely only to Google. It’s like the recipe for Coke.
And this is where it gets tricky.
Once you figure out what is SEO and even if you can figure out some of the important rules and logarithms of Google and you manage to convince Google that your site is relevant to some specific search terms, tomorrow the rules could all change!
You can learn dozens of legitimate tools and even a bunch of really shady methods for getting yourself “ranked” only to find that you pretty much have to start from scratch all over again. Be afraid of wasting lots of time and money in your attempts to outwit the bugs and the monster that is “Google – The End Of The World As We Know It.”
“May Day, May Day… What is SEO?”
Doctors and dentists are highly knowledgable individuals. They train for many years, and most are constantly updating their knowledge and expertise. Doctors and dentists are also infamous in aviation for crashing airplanes. My apologies, but many safety experts feel that the reputation persists because dentists and doctors are not professional pilots. Flying is a complex and potentially hazardous endeavor. Maybe flying is for pros. Maybe we could ask JFK Junior. No, I guess maybe not.
I’ll let you kick that around with our own dentist while she’s doing your next root canal. I just wanted to make the point that perhaps like aviation, Search Engine Optimization is best left to experts. Maybe you should learn what is SEO, and leave it alone.
“Houston, the Eagle has landed….”
Tranquility Base here and I bring good news.
There are lots of SEO experts available and they sit in front of their multiple 32 inch plasma monitors ready and able to help you get your site up, running, optimized, spidered, indexed and found by the masses yearning to spend free on your goods and services. You just have to pony up.
These people know all the ins ands outs of what is SEO. The are intimate with all the spiders, ants and worms too.
They’re not giving up their secrets for free you know.
“Mr. Van Man, send me a dream…”
So you can pay dearly the SEO folks to optimize your site. Sure. You do that.
Another option is to create a somewhat different type of site. Blog Sites have become a very big part of the web world in the past couple of years. Blog Sites used to be complicated to construct, difficult to navigate, and really not very effective at getting your message across.
That has all just changed big time. If I can create the Blog Site you’re on right now, you can do it too.
Lucky you! It matters not a bit if you can perform the SEO magic, or even if you ever learn one thing more about “What is SEO.”
You certainly can now have your very own Blog Site online in a few minutes. You can display, discuss, and promote whatever you like. Your Blog Site will work for you all the day long and nighttime too. You can do this for very low cost, and better yet… way better, you can “monetize” your Blog Site effortlessly.
“Monetize” is a polite way to say “Make big bucks earning 100% commissions, and have the money instantly appear in your electronic wallet while you’re hang gliding in Paraguay or surfing with big biting fish off the coast of Portugal.”
